High Crotch

TakedownWrestling takedownBelt: white+Risk: moderateIBJJFADCCNo-GiSub-OnlyMMA

The high crotch is a powerful single-leg takedown entry from standing, targeting the opponent's far leg with deep penetration. It is a staple in wrestling and BJJ, providing strong control and transition options to top position. Mastery of the high crotch is crucial for effective takedown chains and scrambling.

Start
Standing in elbow tie
End
Top position
Prerequisites: Level change mechanics · Penetration step · Elbow tie control · Finishing a single leg · Basic sprawl defense

Steps

  1. 1
    Establish the elbow tie
With your right hand, secure an inside elbow tie on your opponent’s left arm, using your left hand to post lightly on their right shoulder for distance management.
  2. 2
    Set up your level change
Lower your stance by dropping your hips and bending your knees, keeping your back straight and head up, ready to explode forward.
  3. 3
Clear the tie and open the lane
Use your left hand to pull their right shoulder across their body while your right elbow tie pulls down, creating a lane to their right leg.
  4. 4
    Penetration step and entry
Step your left foot deeply between your opponent’s legs at a 45° angle, driving your knee to the mat and keeping your chest upright for posture.
  5. 5
    Secure the high crotch grip
Shoot your right arm between their legs, wrapping high on their right thigh (crotch), while your left hand releases the tie and clamps around their waist or hip for control.
  6. 6
    Head and posture positioning
Drive your head tightly against their right hip or lower abdomen, looking up and keeping your posture strong to prevent sprawls.
  7. 7
    Lift and turn the corner
Drive off your penetration knee, lifting their leg with your right arm while circling your body to your left (outside), aiming to turn the corner and create an angle.
  8. 8
    Finish to top position
Switch your grip to a double leg or run the pipe by dropping your inside knee and rotating their leg, keeping your chest heavy on their thigh, finishing with control on top.

Key details most people miss

  • Penetration step must be deep enough that your knee lands between their feet, not in front.
  • Head drives into their hip, not the side of their thigh, to prevent guillotine and maximize leverage.
  • Your back must stay straight and hips under you during the lift to avoid getting sprawled.
  • Grip high on the thigh (near the crotch) for maximum lift and to avoid slipping down to the knee.

Common mistakes

  • Shallow penetration step causes you to get stuck under their sprawl.
  • Allowing your head to drift outside the hip exposes you to guillotine chokes.
  • Failing to clear the elbow tie leaves their arm in position to block your entry.
  • Trying to finish without turning the corner lets them square up and defend.
