Calf Slicer (Calf Crush)

Leg LockCompression lockBelt: blue+Risk: highADCCNo-GiSub-OnlyMMA

The calf slicer is a powerful compression lock targeting the calf muscle and knee joint by trapping the opponent’s lower leg over your shin and flexing the knee. It is a high-pressure submission that can force a tap from pain or potential ligament damage, especially effective from the truck or 411 control.

Start
Truck or 411 control
End
Submission
Prerequisites: Maintaining truck control · Leg pummeling · Breaking opponent's posture · Controlling the far hip · Using a figure-four grip

Steps

  1. 1
    Establish Truck or 411 Control
From the truck, secure your opponent’s far leg with your inside leg threaded through, or from 411 (inside sankaku), ensure your legs are locked around their trapped leg with your knee line above their knee.
  2. 2
Thread Your Shin Behind the Knee
Using your free leg, thread your shin horizontally behind the opponent’s knee crease, ensuring your shin bone is directly behind the joint for maximum pressure.
  3. 3
    Control the Opponent’s Ankle
Grip the opponent’s ankle or foot with a figure-four grip (your wrist grabbing your own wrist) or a strong gable grip, keeping their foot tight to your chest.
  4. 4
    Close the Compression Loop
Bring your other leg over the opponent’s trapped shin, locking your ankles together or triangling your legs to prevent their leg from escaping.
  5. 5
    Anchor Your Upper Body
Lean your upper body back slightly, pulling their foot to your chest while keeping your head in line with their knee to prevent them from turning out.
  6. 6
    Apply Compression
Drive your shin forward into the back of their knee while simultaneously pulling their ankle toward your chest, flexing their knee over your shin for maximum calf and joint compression.
  7. 7
    Finish and Monitor Tap
Increase pressure gradually until you feel the opponent’s resistance break or they tap, being mindful of the high injury risk to the knee and calf.

Key details most people miss

  • Your shin must be directly behind the knee joint, not too low on the calf or too high on the thigh, for effective leverage.
  • Keeping your ankles locked or legs triangled prevents the opponent from slipping their leg free during the finish.
  • Pulling the opponent’s foot tightly to your chest increases the flexion at the knee and magnifies the compression force.
  • Leaning back while anchoring your head in line with their knee prevents them from spinning or rolling out.

Common mistakes

  • If your shin is placed too low on the calf, the submission becomes a pain lock with little joint threat, allowing the opponent to tough it out.
  • Failing to lock your ankles or triangle your legs lets the opponent slide their leg out, escaping the submission.
  • If you pull only with your arms and don’t drive your shin forward, you lose the mechanical advantage and the finish is weak.
  • Allowing your upper body to drift off-line from their knee gives the opponent space to turn and relieve pressure.

Counters & responses

They try: Opponent straightens their leg to relieve pressure
You do: Pinch your knees and re-bend their leg by pulling their foot to your chest while driving your shin deeper behind the knee.
They try: Opponent tries to roll or turn away
You do: Anchor your head in line with their knee and follow their hip movement, maintaining tight control with your grips and leg triangle.
They try: Opponent attempts to slip their knee line free
You do: Adjust your hips forward and re-thread your shin behind their knee, keeping your ankles locked and knees pinched.
They try: Opponent grabs your hands to break your grip
You do: Switch to a palm-to-palm (gable) grip or reinforce with your other hand, adjusting your grip higher on their ankle if needed.

Drill prescription

5 rounds × 3 minutes; 50% resistance; goal is 5 clean calf slicer finishes per round from truck or 411, with partner actively trying to free their knee line or turn out.
